It was raining for almost a week in Chennai. Some of the residential colonies got flooded, water entering the ground floor and rising.

Residents of the flats climbed up to the higher floors, the residents of which accommodated the families so dishoused.

 It took three days for the waters to recede and for people to come down to their homes.

Things from inside were lying all over, in the passages and in the playground within the building compound—everything muddy. It was the first day of sunshine, and through a window the sun was peeping in.
