Rebba, thank you very much for translating both the 'mongoose' Haikus. I see mongooses very often here in our garden!

lucky you...
my husband...karam vir...says they are a symbol of good luck...his eyes light up when he sees them...
in varanasi the SSP's house had a family of them...as did the IG's bunglow called - 'Mid Hurst' - in kanpur...their little ones are very cute...the mother with a line of at least 5 following her...would strut down the tile-roof verandah to join us over morning tea...biscuits for them...they'd climb onto the table if i took longer than usual giving them what was 'their due'...one old one was pretty white...wisdom seems to wash the colors off mundane life...be they in/on whatever form...
i wonder if they are found in kashmir...karam is in the midst of very trying times...the worst in 33 years of being with the indian police service...
i hope he recognizes them...they may don a thicker fur in srinagar...

Amazing, Rebba! I didn't know they could be so friendly. I have only read the story of the mongoose protecting the baby by killing a snake - and then the mother thinking the mongoose had attacked the child, seeing the blood on its face.
They are really wonderful creatures. A line of five young one! I hope too that Karam is relaxed enough in these trying times to recognize (cousins of) his old pets.

i reminded him to look out...you never know...
in times like these the most realized of the realized human spirit looks for a sign of reassurance...be it...an intutive feeling...or charm as in thing...reciprocative animal...supportive human...
since the actual conceptual one...can only comfort in faith...with a mundane sign of faith...when you are 'duty bound' to deal with mundane affairs of karmic upheaval...

i wonder why...a selfless act of compassion is almost always misunderstood...invariably it is reciprocated with mistrust...
...as in the story you related...about the mongoose...

Like the mongoose haiku, Nanda, as well as the stories behind them! In the West Indies, the mongoose has always been considered as an enemy...attacking and killing poultry for his livelihood!

Really, Keith, that's interesting. I thought that the mongoose is one creature that has been liked and appreciated everywhere. But I can see the point. In Sweden the wolf is protected, but in rural areas sometimes they kill wolves for the same reaosn that you mention.
